Frequently Asked Questions

What does my registration include?

Registration includes classroom attendance at the Summer Institute, including speakers, panels, lectures, presentations, one off-campus tour, and a resource fair. We will provide coffee in the mornings and water throughout the Institute. It is your choice how many days of the Institute you attend (depending on your registration). Registration does not include travel, meals, housing or other costs.

Where is the Summer Institute taking place?

The programming will all be at the San Francisco State University downtown campus, at 835 Market Street in San Francisco.

Where should I stay?

The Summer Institute is conveniently located directly above the “Powell Street” BART and MUNI subway stop, so AirBnB or housing outside of San Francisco that’s close to a BART or MUNI Light Rail station may be cheaper than staying in a hotel nearby.

How do I get there?

You can drive or take public transportation. We are located at 835 Market Street, between 4th and 5th streets. The Powell Street stop on the BART train, Bay Area Rapid Transit, exits one block from our building, and the MUNI also stops at Powell Street. There are numerous busses along Market Street as well.

Will food be provided?

No. We will have coffee, tea, and water available. There is a food court next door to our building in the Westfield mall, and there are many other restaurants within walking distance. We are glad to provide some recommendations.

I’m already working in the field of sexuality and/or women’s health. Will this information be relevant to me?

Absolutely! We are thrilled you will bring your own expertise to the conversations, and there will be many deep investigations into parts of women’s sexual health and wellness that you are less familiar with — we have speakers on trans women, sex therapy, sex work, HIV, BDSM, polyamory, birth politics, consent, reproductive rights, pornography, Native American identity, puberty education, disability, and more. Some of our presentations are cutting-edge research results from studies that are still active or undergoing analysis.

Is the Summer Institute only for professionals?

Nope! We usually have attendees from walks of life — undergraduate students, graduate students, professors, teachers, counselors, therapists, researchers, community programs, people interested in sex education, and more. The group is widely varied, which makes for wonderful seminar discussions about our differing perspectives and experiences.

Is the Summer Institute only for college students?

Nope! College students often find the Institute of great support to their academic education and pursuits, but the Institute includes all sorts of attendees.

Can I receive continuing education credit for the Summer Institute?

Yes! We are offering AASECT continuing education units for AASECT certified members, and BBS continuing education units for ASWs, LCSWs, MFTis, MFTs, and LPCCs. Session specific credit information will be posted as it’s confirmed. For more information, contact cregs_si@sfsu.edu.

Can I receive academic credit for the Summer Institute?

Not this time. We would love to offer academic credit, but we are not able to this year.

Why is the Summer Institute so affordable?

We strive to keep our costs at the minimum, and our prices reflect the costs of producing the Institute. Thanks to our generous sponsors, we are able to offer students an additional discount to ensure that the educational opportunity is not limited due to financial ability. As one of the foremost Institutes on Sexuality in the country, we strive to be as accessible as possible for all who wish to attend.

I can’t attend the Institute anymore. How do I get a refund?

All registration cancellations must go through Brown Paper Tickets directly, and you can contact them via email at support@brownpapertickets.com, or call them 24/7 at 1-800-838-3006 in the US, Canada, or Puerto Rico. Registrations cancelled before April 15 will receive a 100% refund. Cancellations received after April 15th and before May 15th will be given a 75% refund, with a 25% cancellation fee. Cancellation requests made after May 15th may not receive a refund, however you may transfer your registration to a friend. When you register for the Institute, you agree to these terms.

I want to change the days that I signed up for. How do I change my registration?

Email cregs_si@sfsu.edu and we will look over your request and see what kind of changes are possible.

Do you offer scholarships? Do you have work trade / volunteer shifts?

Not this year. We operate on a very small budget, and we keep our rates as low as possible to ensure that our registration prices are affordable. We do not have any scholarships or work trade, but if you really want to attend and the cost is prohibitive for you, contact cregs_si@sfsu.edu with a description of your situation, and we will discuss it with you.

My discount code isn’t working. What do I do?

The discount codes for people related to our sponsors are available for full week attendance only. Make sure you are signing up for the full week. If that still doesn’t work, contact the Institute staff at cregs_si@sfsu.edu.

Is the Summer Institute accessible to persons with disabilities?

Yes! The building has an elevator and is ADA accessible. We are able to provide ASL interpretation with advanced notice before May 1. Please contact cregs_si@sfsu.edu as soon as possible if ASL is desired.

Will there be all gender restrooms?

Yes! We will have information on precisely where in the building at the Summer Institute.

What other events should I attend when I’m in town?

San Francisco has a vibrant sexuality, LGBTQ, and various other cultural communities and events.  The international LGBTQ film festival Frameline is June 14-24, just after the Summer Institute, which we highly recommend. We will be glad to provide you some information on events which have caught our eye during the first week of June closer to the event.

I have another question that isn’t addressed here! Who do I talk to?

Email cregs_si@sfsu.edu, or call 415-817-4525 to talk to us directly.
