2017 Summer Institute – Sexuality, Activism, & Social Change
May 30, 2017, 9:00am – June 3, 2017, 12:00am
SF State Downtown Campus

In times of political turmoil, sexual liberation, gender freedom, and activism are more relevant than ever. The 2017 Summer Institute on Sexuality will examine previous social justice movements connected to sexuality and gender, including BDSM, HIV/AIDS, reproductive rights and freedoms, and LGBTQ activism, and look at current social justice movements and how they are using art and social connections to forward the cause. Sample topics include but are not limited to: new media and sexuality, black lives matter, the history of gay marriage legalization, legalities of gender politics, the efficacy of activism around safer sex, intersexuality and the medical establishment, asexuality and greysexuality, advocation for minorities in sexual healthcare, art as a social change tool, self-care as activism, and changing institutions (such as academia) from within. More details to come.

About the Summer Institute

The Summer Institute on Sexuality strives to provide a unique opportunity for scholars, students, and professionals to explore contemporary research and practice on sexuality and gender, to develop professional networks, and apply new knowledge and skills to their work. We hope to accomplish this by drawing lecturers, presenters, mentors, and participants from wide range of backgrounds, interests, and areas of expertise, to come together to create an amazing educational community for the duration of the institute and beyond.

We offer weekend, full week, and single session options open to undergraduates, graduates, and professionals who want to expand their knowledge and practice around sexuality and gender. Participants will engage in a wide variety of lectures and presentations on various topics relating to the theme.

Housing

Participants in the Summer Institute are responsible for their own housing while in San Francisco.

Costs and Scholarships

We strive to keep costs affordable. CREGS is able to provide a limited number of partial scholarships. We also encourage SI participants to seek funds from other sources.

Sponsorship

The Summer Institute is graciously sponsored by various foundations and organizations through monetary and in-kind donations. We are always looking for new sponsors in any amount.
