NSRC Turns 6 Years Old Today!!!!

Fri, Feb 20, 2009 at 02:41:22pm   ►by Joy O'Donnell   ►

Six years ago today, the National Sexuality Resource Center opened its doors in order to become one of the primary architects of the field of sexuality studies within the United States. We celebrated by having Former Surgeon General of the United States Dr. David Satcher, M.D. provide the keynote address and charge to NSRC. And what was that charge? Nothing less ambitious than raising the level of sexual literacy in the United States by connecting scientific sexuality research to community activism and advocacy for social justice.

I have had the pleasure of being part of NSRC since before its inception and have watched what was a small, completely unknown startup organization grow into one of the leading, visonary organizations supporting those who do the work of sexuality education, health and rights in this country. As Summer Institute Coordinator for my first 3 years and Director of Outreach the last 3 years, it has been (and continues to be) one of the greatest gifts of my life to grow the sexuality field by connecting people who need one another and NSRC as vital resources.

NSRC is currently circulating a petition to "Save Sexuality Studies"....it is completely appropriate that this occurred during our birthday week. Six years ago today, noone in this country would have had the fused networks in place to make that happen. This week, we had thousands of signatures within 2 days.

I am so absolutely proud of all we have accomplished and become. We continue to learn from our successes and from the ongoing and inevitable challenges too and we have never had more collective clarity, strength and vision for lifelong sexuality education and the liberatory impact it will have on this nation once it begins to become much more realized.

There is so much to look forward to! If you have some thoughts you would like to share in honor of NSRC's 6th birthday, please do so here.

How has NSRC expanded your work? Your life? Your understanding of the field of sexuality?

Tell us! Tell your friends and family too!
