These days it seems like everyone and their mom is worried about what the media are describing as a growing epidemic facing young people- school bullying. The internet is flush with resources for parents wondering how to protect their kids from bullying's worst threat...the gay agenda. Wait, the what?
If this sounds weirdly disconnected or nonsensical, it's only because the message comes from the biggest bully of all, right-wing Christian organization, Focus on the Family. Check out their project on bullying issues, True Tolerance. It's a great way to feel that caffeine rush without any actual coffee.
As school officials across the country are moving to introduce sexuality as a category deserving of protection from bullying, equal-rights opponents are organizing against this move. And they are using some old, historically-effective rhetoric along the way. Namely, they are replacing the words "equal rights" with "special rights". I have seen this strategy before, in 1992, when Colorado residents voted to deny civil rights protections based on sexual orientation. Falling in step with the obvious bigotry (and illegality) of this measure, was a gaggle of folks who thought the Amendment granted gays and lesbians privileges and protections that were not offered to heterosexuals- "special" rights.
