Planned Parenthood Statement on Abortion Ban
Published under:
Washington, D.C. — Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Gloria Feldt released the following statement today regarding Senate approval of legislation to restrict reproductive rights for women. The bill is expected to be signed by President Bush.
"The so-called Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003 will bring an end to providing the best and safest health care for women. This dangerous ban prevents women, in consultation with their families and trusted doctors, from making decisions about their own health.
"This legislation is the culmination of a deceptive campaign to endanger women's lives and mislead the public for political gain.
"This ban makes no exception for a woman's health even though it outlaws medically necessary abortions. It is unconstitutional and we will pursue every legal option, including a federal lawsuit, to prevent it from taking effect. In its lawsuit, Planned Parenthood will seek an immediate injunction preventing this legislation from taking effect.
"Planned Parenthood, the U.S. Supreme Court and the medical community agree that women, in consultation with their families and doctors - not politicians -should decide the best and safest medical treatment."
