San Francisco Guide

Come on over to San Francisco, our gorgeous city by the bay!

e very excited to once again host our annual Summer Institute with this years theme of "Culture, Sex, and Pleasure."  In addition to anticipating the amazing featured speakers, engaging classes, and amazing participants, we're thrilled to have you here visiting San Francisco with us. With that in mind, we've put together some information about San Francisco, and we hope you take advantage of all that our city has to offer.

While in San Francisco

While you’re in San Francisco, don’t forget to visit Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39 and Ghirardelli Square. They cover about half a dozen blocks along the city’s waterfront and are excellent places to buy souvenirs and eat some great food, like Boudin Bakery’s world famous clam chowder served in a sourdough bread bowl! Also, be sure to take a walk, or bike ride, on the Golden Gate Bridge, one of the city’s oldest engineering marvels. While visiting the Piers, take a boat to Alcatraz Island, the former prison and enjoy some of San Francisco’s most popular sights. Just across the bay is Sausalito a small town, best known for its spectacular waterfront views.

In downtown San Francisco you can take a walk along Union Square, one of the three original parks in the city, surrounded by great shopping and restaurants. The theater district is a few blocks away from Union Square, and also nearby is the Cable Cars line, which begins a block south of Union Square at Powell and Market streets. Also, a few blocks north is San Francisco’s Chinatown neighborhood so, shop away!

Walking around San Francisco is a great way to spend an afternoon, so be sure to walk up (or down) the city’s "crookedest street", Lombard street and, don’t forget to enjoy the awesome view from Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill.

Golden Gate Park is the San Francisco’s largest park, and one of the most popular attractions in the park is the Japanese Tea Garden. Other great sites in the park include the Strybing Arboretum, California Academy of Sciences and Conservatory of Flowers.
